They are the only way to use a combination of two keys to execute a single keybind input. In addition, there are also modifier keys that can be used in combination with the aforementioned standalone keys. All letter keys such as and, number keys such as and, and function keys such as and are valid candidates. But there's a lot of good explanation about the disciplines in 14, since they have so much time/space to explore it.Almost all keys on the keyboard are valid keys to be used as inputs for skills on the hotbar, with some exceptions such as and. (bonus points to you for the FF4 references. I don't see any evidence that other black mages, even if identical in appearance, are anything but people in uniforms, like a doctor in blue scrubs or a soldier in olive fatigues. The manufactured mages of FF9 were unique to that world and that evil empire's plan. However, both Tactics and 14 have plenty of plain-faced black mages who wear the robe and pointy hat proudly. ![]() The shadows obscuring the face may be due to an incidental magical phenomenon, a side effect of drawing on destructive elemental forces. Since you don't need to be physically imposing to be magically dangerous, small folks may be drawn to the discipline. Tellah and FuSoYa come to mind, and they are, respectively, a renowned archmage and a powerful Lunarian/guardian of the moon.Īs for the appearance of black mages, I'd say their small stature and dress is mostly a stereotype. this is why Sages or Wizards who can fully wield both types (not in the limited manner of Red mages, who can never really top out either discipline) are so rare and powerful. (2) Sometimes the yellow-eye black mages are manufactured, e.g. in Mysidia they're both taught as distinct disciplines, and they both seem to be equally respected. It's not that Black magic is 'evil' - not in FF worlds. Or is it that whenever someone learns cross-discipline, they're called something else (Red Mage, Sage, etc)? So what is the core thing about them that makes it so that no White Mages ever learn to cast things like Fire, and no Black Mages ever learn simple healing spells? Why are they taught as completely distinct disciplines? (1) What characterizes the difference between White and Black magic at their core? Do they have a different power source, or is it just a different way of implementing your magical craft using the same source? On the surface, white magic is more heal-y and black magic is more damage-y, but they're not 100% without overlap in some of their functions. They sometimes look like whatever race they are, but then also there are many black mages that have a hat shrouding their face to the extent the face appears stark black except for glowing yellow eyes. They tend to always look like whatever race they are (though often with an iconic white robe with red accents.)īlack mages damage stuff, damage stuff some more, have a few enemy debuffs, and a small handful of spells that can help if cast on the party in niche circumstances (e.g. White mages cure stuff, remove negative status effects, have a smattering of party buffs, a handful of enemy debuffs, and one offensive spell type in the form of Holy. ![]()
